Educating Ourselves about the Problem of Crisis Pregnancy Centers

by the IVRF Membership/Education Team

The Community Church of Chapel Hill Unitarian Universalist and the Kehillah Synagogue hosted a showing of the award winning documentary “Preconceived” on Feb. 15th!

The film is about the crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) pervading America, shedding light on how many of these centers are a part of a movement striving to make abortion unthinkable and illegal, exploring the complex role of deception, finances, faith, and privacy.

“Preconceived” follows the stories of two women, Maleeha in Texas and Maria in Colorado, whose searches to terminate their unplanned pregnancies misled them to anti-abortion centers. The film also features testimonies from individuals on both sides of the issue, including leaders of the CPC industry as well as experts who caution why many CPC practices are problematic. Amid a shifting legal landscape, “Preconceived” underscores the importance of understanding the lack of resources available to pregnant people.

The film was followed by a presentation by NC Representative Allen Buansi. These CPC’s get $19 million every two years from the State of NC. There is no oversight of these centers, and unlike other programs, Rep. Buansi is unable to get any accounting of these funds. Legislation has been proposed to require accountability but has not yet passed. A local provider shared how they see many patients from Southern States, that don’t allow abortion, or only up to 6 weeks, in North Carolina. However, as abortion in NC is now only allowed to 12 weeks, North Carolina and Southern patients now need to go to Virginia for an abortion.

Participants felt they learned a lot from the film and speakers.
